PSYCHOLOGISTS
I have been working in Private Practice in the Ponsonby area for the past 10 years. I have 18 years experience as a Clinical Psychologist, working in Auckland and in London. I use Cognitive Behaviour Therapy as the framework for dealing with most issues, and I have training in many specialised applications of Cognitive Therapy, including the Anxiety Disorders, and Depression.. I have experience with a wide range of adult mental health issues and have completed trainings in the UK for Cognitive Schema Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, and Cognitive Therapy for a variety of other mental health issues. I have recently trained in EMDR for use with trauma, and am doing ongoing training in Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples. I enjoy working with the couple relationship in therapy and find this work rewarding and touching to see couples being able to reconnect with each other. While in London I also did a 5 year training at the Chiron Centre in a Humanistic Integrative form of Psychotherapy. The course included a focus on the therapy relationship (object relations), along with Gestalt Body Psychotherapy, Reichian-oriented bodywork (vegetotherapy), Bioenergetic exercises, Body Reading, and Biodynamic Massage. These methods can be used as part of the psychotherapeutic process as appropriate.
I have 22 years experience in helping people overcome their dificulties both in New Zealand and the United Kingdom. In the last 12 years I have specialised in the use of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), in the treatment of the Anxiety Disorders, and when these co occur with Depression and Substance Use Disorders.
The Anxiety Disorders include, panic attacks, phobias, obsessive compulsions, post traumatic stress and generalised anxiety states. Often when people experience anxiety for long periods of time they also become depressed or start to use alcohol or drugs to relieve their distress and issues need to be adressed for a full recovery.
In working with people with symptoms of post traumatic stress, I use Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), which like CBT is also supported by an expending body of research as aneffective therapy. I am involved in ongoing training and supervision in these therapies to achieve and maintain a level of excellence in my work.
In the past I have taught, supervised other psychologists, and conducted research in the area of the treatment of panic attacks and anaphilactic shock, and in the area of the co-occurance of alcohol and drug use and pre-existing anxiety disorders.
